"It gives me a thrill to have the occasional opportunity to collaborate closely with young and gifted playwrights like Kyle Chua, who’s smart as hell and has a lot to say about what it’s like to swim through the crosscurrents of cultural and sexual identity."
— Director Michael Hammond | BU Today
Kyle was born in Cagayan de Oro, Philippines and came of age in Glendale, California. Armed with a degree in Theatre Arts from Boston University’s School of Theatre, he studied acting and playwriting with equal emphasis. He has interned at the Asian American Writers’ Workshop and has twice been nominated for the Kennedy Center ACTF Award for his acting work in educational theater. Exploring themes and subject matters related to queerness, race, nationality, and language, he centers his work on the marginalized members of American society, with a focus on immigrants, their lineage and psychology. His writing has been workshopped by the Boston Center of the Performing Arts and New Repertory Theatre, among others. He speaks and writes in English, Bisaya, and Tagalog.
He became a member of the Screen Actors Guild - American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) in 2019 and has since been interested in finding work in film and television as an actor, screenwriter, and director. His latest project—a short film called SALVE REGINA—is a psychological-horror about the effects of childhood trauma. If funded and successfully completed, he plans to use the short film as proof-of-concept for a feature-length work.
